No, Tucker Carlson’s airing of Jan. 6 footage wasn’t connected to House select committee’s end

If Your Time is short

  • The House Select Committee to investigate the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol shut down in early January. It didn’t disband in connection with a March 6 Fox News segment.

On March 6, Fox News host Tucker Carlson aired newly released security video from the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol, and re-aired old, false claims about the riot.

The segment has drawn condemnation from some Senate Republicans, while other conservatives appeared vindicated by the footage. Steve Bannon, a onetime adviser to former President Donald Trump and host of the podcast "War Room," discussed in a March 7 episode of the podcast what he and a guest characterized as lies about the Jan. 6 attack.

But a Facebook post sharing a clip of that conversation wrongly reframes it.

"The January 6 Committee disbanded immediately after the new Footage was released," the post says.

The House Select Committee to investigate the Jan. 6 attack released its final report on Dec. 22. The committee officially shut down Jan. 3, when the Republican-led House was sworn in. After 18 months of investigation, the committee sent its work to the Justice Department, recommending that Trump be prosecuted in connection with the insurrection.

We rate claims that the committee disbanded because of the new footage False.
