Ballots are due Jan. 31 in the special 1st Congressional District election to replace the seat held by former Rep. David Wu, D-Ore, who resigned in August. The big-name candidates are Republican Rob Cornilles and Democrat Suzanne Bonamici.
Since they won special primary elections Nov. 8, PolitiFact Oregon has checked 16 statements made by Bonamici, Cornilles and their proxies.
A lot of the back and forth had to do with voting records, tax increases, bipartisanship credentials, job creation and Medicare and Social Security. Not every statement was fact-checked. Instead, we tried for a mix of simple and complicated, picking from debates as well as campaign material.
As you can see, the final tally is eight statements by Cornilles and five by Bonamici. Throw in the Democratic Party of Oregon, the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee and the Oregon Republican Party and we have 16 in all.
