PunditFact Madness Elite 8

We saw some big upsets in the first round of voting in our PunditFact Madness bracket, as conservatives Peggy Noonan, George Will and Bill Kristol were all bested by lesser-known challengers.

Kristol fell to Washington Post columnist Michael Gerson, Will to Amy Walter of The Cook Political Report and Noonan to the Associated Press’ Julie Pace.

Joining Pace, Walter and Gerson in the Elite 8 are Bob Woodward of the Washington Post, CNN pundits Donna Brazile and Ana Navarro, veteran pundit Cokie Roberts and NBC’s Robert Gibbs.

We chose our Sweet 16 pundits based largely on the number of times they've appeared on the Sunday news shows in 2014 -- the pinnacle of punditry.

Here’s a breakdown of the four quarterfinal matchups:

Quarterfinal No. 1

Amy Walter. Walter is national editor of The Cook Political Report and previously served as political director of ABC News. According to her biography, Walter was named one of DC's "50 Top Journalists" by Washingtonian Magazine in 2009 and honored with the Washington Post's Crystal Ball award for her spot-on election predictions in 2000. She is a member of the Board of Trustees at Colby College where she graduated summa cum laude. In 2014, she’s appeared on Fox News Sunday, Face the Nation and State of the Union. Walter has more than 57,000 followers on Twitter.

Ana Navarro. Navarro is a Republican political strategist and CNN political analyst. According to her biogaphy, she served as the National Co-Chair of John McCain’s Hispanic Advisory Council and was a national surrogate for the McCain 2008 campaign. A Floridian, Navarro served on Gov. Jeb Bush’s transition team and served as his first Director of Immigration Policy in the Executive Office of the Governor. In 2014, she’s appeared on the Sunday shows five times. Navarro has nearly 14,000 followers on Twitter.

Quarterfinal No. 2

Michael Gerson. Gerson is a conservative columnist for the Washington Post and a former adviser to President George W. Bush. According to his biography, Gerson was previously a senior editor covering politics at U.S. News and World Report. Gerson was a speechwriter and policy adviser for Jack Kemp and a speechwriter for Bob Dole during the 1996 presidential campaign. He has also served Senator Dan Coats of Indiana as Policy Director. Gerson has appeared three times in 2014 on Face the Nation. Gerson has nearly 8,000 followers on Twitter.

Cokie Roberts. Roberts is a political commentator on ABC and NPR. From 1996-2002, Roberts co-anchored This Week. According to her biography, Roberts holds more than twenty honorary degrees, serves on the boards of several non-profit institutions and on the President's Commission on Service and Civic Participation. This year the Library of Congress named her a "Living Legend," one of the very few Americans to have attained that honor. Roberts has appeared twice in 2014 on ABC’s This Week. Roberts does not have a Twitter account.

Quarterfinal No. 3

Julie Pace. Pace has covered the White House for the Associated Press since 2013. According to her biography, Pace joined the AP’s video operations department in Washington in 2007 and a year later covered the presidential campaign as a video and print reporter. She is a 2004 graduate of Northwestern University’s Medill School of Journalism. She worked at e.tv (a South African television station) and as a freelancer in South Africa and Zambia in 2003 and 2004. From 2005 to 2007, she worked as a reporter at the Tampa Tribune in Tampa, Fla. Pace appears on Fox News Sunday. Pace has nearly 9,000 Twitter followers.

Bob Woodward. Woodward is an author and writer with the Washington Post. According to his biography, Woodward has authored or coauthored 16 nonfiction books in the last 36 years. All 16 have been national bestsellers and 12 of them have been No. 1 national nonfiction bestsellers — more No. 1 national nonfiction bestsellers than any contemporary author. Woodward and fellow Post report Carl Bernstein wrote stories reporting on the Watergate scandal that led to the eventual resignation of President Richard Nixon. In 2014, Woodward has appeared on Face the Nation and Fox News Sunday. Woodward does not have a Twitter account.

Donna Brazile. Brazile is a Democratic political strategist and CNN political analyst who served as campaign manager for Vice President Al Gore in 2000. According to her biography, Brazile is the author of Cooking with Grease: Stirring the Pots in American Politics, an adjunct professor at Georgetown University, a syndicated newspaper columnist for Universal Uclick, a columnist for Ms. Magazine, and O, the Oprah magazine. She’s appeared five times on the Sunday shows in 2014. Brazile has 380,000 followers on Twitter.

Robert Gibbs. Gibbs is former press secretary for President Barack Obama and a NBC political analyst. According to his biography, Gibbs began working with Obama in April 2004 serving as communications director for his United States Senate race and later as his Senate communications director. Gibbs previously served as communications director for South Carolina Sen. Fritz Hollings. Gibbs has appeared on Meet The Press three times in 2014. He does not have a Twitter account.
