Immigration and the economy were the big topics on ABC's This Week on July 4, 2010.
We examined a claim by Jorge Ramos, a Univision news anchor and a commentator on immigration, that President Barack Obama has deported more people in his first year than President George W. Bush did in his last year. We found there were some caveats to that claim and rated it Mostly True.
We also rated a claim by former Bush adviser Daniel Senor that the Japanese government spends "25 percent of its national budget" on interest on its debt. We rated that False.
Bloomberg News editor Al Hunt questioned Sen. John McCain's apparent suggestion that crime had increased in Arizona because of illegal immigration. We checked Hunt's claim that crime had gone down and rated it True.
We also rated McCain's claim that then-Sen. Barack Obama once voted to "gut" a provision in the immigration reform bill. We rated that Mostly True.
