PolitiFact is looking for a talented journalist to join our coverage of the 2024 presidential election. This reporter will specialize in stories about U.S. politics through the lens of mis- and disinformation, exposing false narratives online and holding the forces that create them to account.

We’re looking for a reporter who can identify false claims before they go earth-shatteringly viral, someone who has an interest in debunking photos and videos manipulated through generative AI and someone who can quickly find credible sources to debunk claims about often complicated policies.

You’ll get a lot of your ideas by monitoring social media — so you’d better have skills to navigate Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, TikTok and now … X. PolitiFact has a partnership with Meta that provides us with key insights into false claims that are likely to go viral. There’s plenty to fact-check and never a shortage of story ideas.

PolitiFact is part of the Poynter Institute for Media Studies, which aims to create best practices to guide quality journalism around the world. That goal is best served by a multigenerational staff that embodies a range of life experiences and viewpoints. Candidates of all cultures and backgrounds are encouraged to apply.

PolitiFact has offices in both St. Petersburg, Florida, and Washington, D.C. We prefer candidates in those locations, but remote work is a possibility. The salary range is between $50,000 and $70,000, based on credentials and job location.

This is a full-time position that includes a standard benefits package.

Benefits to working at Poynter include:

  • Generous paid time off, eight designated paid holidays, plus two weeks paid leave at the end of every calendar year;
  • Free access to Poynter training;
  • 403(b) retirement plan with 1% employer contribution of eligible compensation;
  • Paid parental leave benefit allows for up to 24 weeks of compensated leave for birth moms;
  • Paid parental leave benefit allows for up to 16 weeks of compensated leave for spouses, partners, and adoptive parents.

Please send a resume, three reporting/writing samples and a letter explaining why you’d be a good fit to [email protected]. We will begin considering candidates as soon as applications are received.

No phone calls, please. Poynter is an equal opportunity employer.
