Old video about Donald Trump, Hillary Clinton recast as ‘breaking news’

If Your Time is short

  • This video is from 2016, when Donald Trump was president-elect. It takes a comment Trump made then out of context and exaggerates it.

Critics of former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, eager to see her held accountable for using a private email server, may be disappointed by a recent Facebook post that dangles the prospect of a forthcoming prosecution.

"Breaking Trump quietly announces Hillary’s prosecution is moving forward," reads a description of an April 23 post’s video.

It was flagged as part of Meta’s efforts to combat false news and misinformation on its News Feed. (Read more about our partnership with Meta, which owns Facebook and Instagram.)

If you watch the video, a clip from a conservative YouTube channel, it soon becomes clear that it’s not breaking, or recent.

Featured Fact-check

It’s from November 2016. The show’s host speculates that former President Donald Trump — then president-elect — would prosecute the Clinton family, a promise he made during the campaign. The show cites a Nov. 22, 2016, tweet from New York Times reporter Maggie Haberman, who said: "Trump says ‘no’ when asked if he is taking investigations off the table for Clintons but adds he doesn’t want to ‘hurt the Clintons.’"

Still, the Times that day reported that Trump "had no interest in pressing for Mrs. Clinton’s prosecution over her use of a private email server or for financial acts committed by the Clinton Foundation."

Back here in the present, we found no evidence that Trump has more recently suggested he has inside knowledge of any prosecution proceeding against Clinton.

We rate this post False.
