Poynter’s PolitiFact, a Pulitzer Prize-winning fact checking media organization, today announced its partnership with NBCUniversal’s TV stations in Florida – NBC 6 / WTVJ, Telemundo 51 / WSCV, Telemundo 31 Orlando / WTMO, Telemundo 49 Tampa / WRMD and Telemundo Fort Myers Naples / WWDT – to bring its fact-checks to the stations’ newscasts, digital, mobile and streaming platforms.
This is the third time that PolitiFact partners with NBC 6, following the 2018 and 2020 elections, and the first time that PolitiFact works with the Telemundo owned stations. PolitiFact launched a Spanish-language companion, PolitiFact en Español, in March 2023.
"NBC 6 has consistently shown its commitment to giving its South Florida viewers access to high-quality, accurate information. We’re delighted to extend this partnership to cover Florida candidates running for high-profile offices in 2024," said PolitiFact Executive Director Aaron Sharockman.
"Partnering with Telemundo stations is a no brainer. We are pleased to bring our fact-checking to Telemundo’s local Spanish-language audiences for the first time. We look forward to working with the stations to address the misinformation challenges we see every day for Spanish-speakers and to get to know Telemundo’s Florida viewers."
"With this partnership, we are pleased to double-down on our commitment to delivering google-proof journalism in two languages. We are pleased to team up with PolitiFact and its experienced team of editors and reporters to make fact-checking available across all of our stations, in every platform, and in two languages. As Floridians prepare to exercise their civic right, our newsrooms will be hyper-focused on ensuring our audiences have the information they need to elect their political leaders," said Jorge Carballo, President/GM of NBC 6 and Telemundo 51, and Migdalia Figueroa, Regional President/GM of Telemundo 31, Telemundo 49 and Telemundo Fort Myers.
At the close of April 2023, NBC and Telemundo owned stations in Miami, Orlando, Tampa and Fort Myers reached a combined total of more than 2.3 million viewers across their linear programs, including more than 1.6 million Hispanic viewers. Approximately 5.4 million Hispanics reside in the Miami, Orlando, Tampa and Fort Myers DMAs, which represents nearly 85% of Hispanics in the state of Florida.
