Thorburn is a former executive director of the Republican Party of Texas, an appointee in the departments of Education and Housing and Urban Development during the Ronald Reagan and George H.W. Bush administrations and the author of a history on the Young Americans for Freedom political organization, according to biographical information on the party's website. More recently, he has written “Red State: An Insider’s Story of How the GOP Came to Dominate Texas Politics.”
