Dan Patrick, David Dewhurst debate for the second time in five days

By W. Gardner Selby May 7, 2014

Five days after debating in Houston--watch that video to the right, below--the remaining contenders for the Republican lieutenant governor nomination went at it again this morning.

David Dewhurst, the incumbent, and state Sen. Dan Patrick, who led Dewhurst in the March primary, jawed during a 45-minute roundtable event hosted by WFAA-TV, the ABC affiliate in Dallas.

We live-tweeted the debate from @politifacttexas.

And we heard a few previously fact-checked claims:

--Twice, Dewhurst charged Patrick with pocketing employee payroll taxes during business troubles in the 1980s. We'd found no proof of that.

--Patrick declared, again, that we found a Dewhurst TV ad to be a "ridiculous lie." Not quite; we did rate one claim Pants on Fire (see those checks to the right).

--Patrick said Dewhurst oversaw budget cuts on border security. We found this claim unsupported earlier this year.
