Jennifer Shilling, a Democrat from La Crosse in western Wisconsin, was elected to the Wisconsin Assembly in 2000 and served there until winning election to the state Senate in 2011 by defeating incumbent Dan Kapanke, a La Crosse Republican, in a recall election.
