Republican from Virginia
Stephen Martin, R-Chesterfield, was elected Virginia House of Delegates in 1987. Seven years later, he won a seat in the state Senate that he still holds today. Martin is chairman of the Senate Education and Health Committee. He is a social conservative who is active in the Swift Creek Baptist Church. In 2000, Martin unsuccessfully sought the GOP nomination for the 7th District congressional seat, losing a close primary to Eric Cantor. In 2013, he unsuccessfully sought the Republican nomination for lieutenant governor.
