The Truth-O-Meter is coming to the world of New York politics.

Today we announce the creation of PolitiFact New York through a partnership with the Buffalo News. Starting in a few weeks, reporters will begin analyzing the claims and promises of New York state and local politicians.

PolitiFact, which won the Pulitzer Prize for its coverage of the 2008 presidential coverage, now has partners in 17 states.

Fact-checkers already are scrutinizing the statements of politicians in Arizona, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Texas, Rhode Island, California, Virginia, Iowa, Missouri, Nevada, New Hampshire, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin. New state fact-checking websites in North Carolina and now in New York are expected to launch in the coming weeks.

PolitiFact also maintains PunditFact, the fact-checking website dedicated to analyzing statements made by news media personalities.

"We’ve long wanted to bring PolitiFact to New York, and the Buffalo News will be a great partner," said PolitiFact executive director Aaron Sharockman. "We look forward to working with them as they fact-check politicians in Albany and around the state."

"PolitiFact is a great feature," said Buffalo News Editor Mike Connelly. "It is smart, thorough, independent and nonpartisan. In an era of wild claims across the political spectrum, it gives readers and voters a way to establish what is true – and what isn’t. We are excited that the Buffalo News will extend PolitiFact reporting to New York."

The Buffalo News is the largest news-gathering organization in New York State outside the New York metro area. The News circulates throughout Western New York and is online at buffalonews.com and has a guide to everything Buffalo at buffalo.com. It will cover politics statewide as part of PolitiFact New York.
