The Truth-O-Meter has arrived in Rhode Island.

The Providence Journal has launched PolitiFact Rhode Island in partnership with the St. Petersburg Times and PolitiFact.com. The Rhode Island site will focus on the 2010 campaigns, particularly the races for governor and Congress.

Like our other partner sites in Texas, Georgia and Florida, PolitiFact Rhode Island uses the same journalistic approach and reader-friendly design as our national site. The Rhode Island edition is integrated with the national site and uses our Truth-O-Meter to rate the accuracy of statements by candidates, elected officials and political parties.

The Rhode Island team will be headed by veteran Providence Journal editor Timothy S. Murphy. It includes staff writers C. Eugene Emery Jr. and Cynthia Needham.

The success of our state sites have shown us that the Truth-O-Meter works as well in state and local politics as at the national level. Our expansion around the country is based on our belief that every candidate and elected official in the nation ought to face the Truth-O-Meter.

PolitiFact is a project of the St. Petersburg Times, which is seeking news organizations in other states that want to form similar partnerships.

Said Neil Brown, the editor of the Times, "We are changing the face of American journalism, one state at a time."
